I have a 2.5 year dominant chow and most of his training has been geared toward no aggression but...as mentioned in the stranger thread one poster uses a pinky wag to get her dog to bark should she feel threatened or wish to ward off a potential problem. Now, I can not teach my dog to bark on command. He morso woofs but it's real soft and not very strong. I have been told find out what makes him bark and use that but the only way he'll really make noise for us is if he's growling and I cannot allow growling. If you have a training method for teaching a dog to bark I'd love to hear it.
back tie the dog in a harness and fustrate the dog for its toy or food and as soon as you get a bark, reward then start associating a word with the bark and reward.
Work at home. Have a lot of work done on your house, so you frequently have to get up from your desk and answer the door. Before you know it, your dog will think he needs to sound off every time you get out of your chair.
There are many methods that will work quite well. In any case, don't forget to teach a cease barking command along with it. If not, remember, you asked for it.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
I put my dog into a sit. I held out a treat and said "speak". The dog went through all his behaviors to try to get the treat, but I wouldn't give it to him. Finally he started to get frustrated and barked at me. I said "good speak" and gave him the treat. Then I repeated this. It took about 3 or 4 10 minute sessions of this to teach him to speak on command. The key here, I think, was to get frustrate him.
I didnt half to train this lab... the other dogs did that and I just added the key "whos their or whose that" for if some one comes to the door or into the drive I would love to figure out how to get my scaredy cat to bark on command outdoors or when I am not home as well I dont belive he will stand for me messing with his treats (probally will give me the devil eye and walk away) and the stop command for my dog is the sound the dog whisper guy uses and that works very well
