I haven't been on very long but have never heard of you. That's a very interesting name, I love it. And I believe you're right. I think she sees them as family members or her buddies. She stays at home with them all day so she probably sees them as her life, although she does some kind of nurse consultant on-line thing. I'd wager dollars to donuts if she got rid of all but 2 she'd feel just as fulfilled but her stress level would plummet. She and my uncle fight and argue most of the time and he's mentioned he can't stand all of the dogs. It also tells me where I rank in her pack, and I'm supposedly her favorite nephew! There really is nothing I can do, I can't get sheep to vote!

I'd give her some videos of Ed's. It couldn't hurt...maybe something will sink in.

Maybe this is a long shot, but you know how I convinced my uncle to be more prepared for his malti-poo (haha)? I said, "Hey, I'm enroling in an obedience class for fun, you should bring your dog!" Worked like a charm. Unfortunately the class was full and I didn't make it in, but my uncle is attending, and learning a lot. They're doing great with their dog.
That might not work with your aunt because she has 13 dogs, but it might be worth a shot. That way she'll see it's not just your opinion you're pushing, but widely-held opinions. Hard to say though, she might just be offended. Depends on the person.

Eric,Please let me know if your aunt or uncle make the decision to rehome any of their terriers. We have a highly sucessfull Airedale rescue organization here in michigan. I have been with them for a number of years as a foster home. Also, keeping an ear out for any wire fox terrier in need of rescue. Sounds like they could use a visit from ceaser milan or someone with similiar skills.

I understand, Eric. I also need to say, airedales are pretty large dogs, 20-23 inches and 45-50 pounds. Welsh terriers run around 20 pounds and wirehaired fox terriers aren't teeny tiny, either. If they are all running in an aggressive, undisciplined attack, your aunt is in real danger of being seriously injured. Or of seeing one of her dogs torn to pieces in front of her eyes. You might approach her in this way, she's putting her dogs at risk of injury or death by not containing/controlling them. If she's not worried about herself, she may listen if it involves danger to her dogs.

It certainly not a healthy situation for your aunt or uncle to have so many dogs existing in their home. Without some management of such a large pack, it makes me think of those news stories where people collect certain animals. They love them but it seems the needs of the person blinds them to the harm they are causing to the animals. If some of the dogs are being attacked by the others, I would say one time is an accident after that it is abuse.
If this wasn’t a family member and you saw this situation, do you think it is bad enough where you would report it? If yes, it may be that a visit from Animal Control would make your aunt realize that she is not providing a safe environment for her pets and she will have to change the way she lives with her dogs and protect the ones that are being attacked.
I know that would be a very hard thing to do, but it could be done without “anyone” ever knowing that it was you that made the call.

Well it's just one of those "ya gotta laugh, cry, yell, or STEW" situations, if you ask me...
Your aunt is not very likely to change her ways at this late date, IMHO -- But she probably won't be mauled to death by her pack of pet terriers either, Eric, so try to chill & enjoy going OUT to eat with them <:-)
How anyone can live without a dog is beyond me... |

Thanx Cheryl, between you and Janice I may be able to help them, I didn't think it would be possible. I know allot of them are pets but I also know she would give some to homes that qualify with her standards. I wonder if she'd be up to giving to another rescue. And the way Janice put it, about dog getting mauled in front of her may get her to realize what she's in the middle of. I sure hope so. I'll approach my uncle with it. That way she can yell at him!
Thanx guys. I'll let you know what happens.
