Below is a partial description of a polo match being held in Virginia this May:
During the day of May 12th, 2007 - JOURNEY will perform the Star Spangled Banner & God Save the Queen heard like no other... Be sure to keep your eyes on the skys overhead for a special surprise proudly presented by the roaring United States Navy F-18s & BlackWater USA! We also have planned a spectacular presentation by the United States Park Police Aviation Unit, K9 division and Horse Mounted division.
I am attending this event and am very excited about the K9 unit due to perform.
I have never attended a K9 presentation and don't know what to expect from the dogs and their handlers.
Has anyone ever been to something like this? I'd be very interested to know what type of 'show' they put on.
I have been to several police K-9 competitions and one in DC I dont think you will see any real challenges or stress put on the dogs, its way to public and the whole Idea is for the dogs to look good. In America you always have those people who would say the dogs were being mistreted if a real challenge were to be given. The general population don't understand that when a dog is sent on a human to protect the life of another human there is blood drawn. A human high on drugs doesnt give up easy. They kick, hit punch, bite pull hair and do anything they can to hurt the dog. The military nor police nor PPD owner waits until that life threatening moment to see if their dog has what it takes to stay in the fight. It happens way before that when the decoy is in the suit with a stick or what ever to challenge the dog. Dogs do take stick hits. Some dogs do get run. It has been my experience they put on a feel good show that makes every one involved look good. You will enjoy it.

Now that you mention it, I bet you are right about it's potential to be a "feel good show". I also think you are right that I will enjoy. Whatever it is they do. However, I was hoping for something a little awe inspiring. Come to think of it, even just watching the dog's attention on his handler (with such a big crowd around them) will probably be very cool to watch.
In The Month of May there are usually tons of Police Memorial Demo's and seminars around the country. Most have K9 demonstrations. The one we have here usually consists of at least 8-10 police agencies as well as the local military base K9's. Just keep an eye on the paper for the festivities, they are usually advertised.
