I'd rather a bruised bottom then 50 stiches on thier face. In my opinion the dog is predictable but the kids are not.

She has missed a key principle when dealing with any pet. She does not realize that they are still animals and will act and defend themselves as any animal would. I congratulate you for stepping in as you did and saving the little girl from a certain injury, be it emotional or physical. One of my dogs is a very sweet, docile, Golden Ret. whenever I take him out in public he is on a prong collar with a choke chain back up, simply because even though I can reasonably predict his behavior, I cannot be certain of his reactions to other peoples behavior. Thank you for protecting your niece, your dog, and yourself. Keep up the good work. Terry Treat them like they are animals. Train them like they are animals. Love them like they are people.
