Louanne,
Yes, I do have one of those 60-inch umbrellas, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'll just have to give her time to adjust to the cold and rain; she's been in the shelter ever since she arrived at the rescue.
Mike
I betcha she'll adjust fine..... especially if you are matter-of-fact and calm, no sympathetic talk (I know, I know :grin, and give her a good rubdown when you get back in.
Michael, if she's so bothered by the cold, rain and wind, maybe you can outfit her with a really really warm sweater. It might make her feel more comfortable.
Yeah, she'll adjust. Oscar STILL hates to get his feet wet, but when he was little we just picked him up, placed him in the middle of the lawn and waited until he went to the bathroom (werent' cruel about it - just gave him enough time to have a pee, then back inside.) If he just stood there, blinking at us, we'd take him in, but usually, he really did have to go, and since he was thrust into the wet/coldness anyway, he'd go. Today, he gives us dirty looks the whole time he's out in the rain, but he goes out becuase he knows he can't pee in the house. It's a good thing we don't have to carry him out anymore - I can't lift 93lbs!!
I actually went out that day and bought rain booties, rain jacket and hood, and long johns for her She looked so adorable that my wife and I almost died when we put her outside and she just stood there, hardly able to see from under the rain hood. Unfortunately, all that paraphenalia didn't do any good; she still wouldn't go potty.
What eventually worked was that I took her out every 15 minutes. If she didn't go, I would put her back into her crate, wait another 15 minutes, then try again. Eventually the flood gates opened and she went. We felt so bad about doing this, but as others have said in this thread, we had to be tough and in control during these early months of her development.
Thankfully, the potty diapers in the kitchen are no more.
Once the nor'eastern subsided, she was happily playing in the mud and wet grass. Also, the potty problems disappeared. Fergi just doesn't like the rain yet, maybe never. But we'll work with her; after all, she is a member of our family now.
