I am having trouble getting my female to sit in a straight line beside me. She is agility trained and is always waiting to run so she sits sideways beside me looking for directions where to run.
I want to do obedience and have good eye contact, and she does heel sit and down etc. good. Just sits sideways.
I also have a new puppy that wants to do the same thing. What am I doing wrong.

Anybody have any training tips? Thanks
You can use food to lure the dog into position, and fade the lure (the food) fairly soon, continuing to use the fingers that held the food the same way if needed...... and also don't reward for the sit the way you don't want it. That is, ignore the "wrong" sit and mark and reward the "right" one.
P.S. You know how the treat can guide a dog into the first sit (butt goes down as head faces up to see the treat), and then the empty fingers can become the hand signal for that sit?
Try practicing heeling and sitting inside with the dog up against the wall. There is only enough space for the dog between you and the wall. That forces them to sit straight. I guess you could do it outside up against a wall like at a school or some large building. That's what I did with my dog and she sits straight w/o the wall now, 99% of the time.
