When I take my dog out for exclusive training, she goes nuts for her toys and food. She does really well. However, when it's just a normal time at home and I ask for a sit or down, etc. She will (sometimes) do it half-assed, or I have to repeat it again up to 2 more times before she does it.
I had been giving her a pop on her collar, but stopped doing it because I didn't know if that was correct. I wanted to ask the members 1st and see your thoughts. What do you guys think? and do your dogs sometimes do the same?

Alex: I don't know how old your dog is & if a puppy, no compulsion should be used just treats. There is one more thing, are you giving the commands in the exact way you do during a more formal setting? Tone of voice & mannerisms speak volumes to dogs. You can't expect your dog to respond the same if you don't ask the same! After this, yes, compulsion teaches her "I must ALWAYS", but only if done fairly & correctly, and only if you are sure she absolutely understands the command in the first place.
Hi Susan, she is going on 15 mos. She definitely knows the commands I ask of her and they are given in the same tone & manner as in training. Only difference is there is no reward in my possession besides praise. She doesn't care too much for praise, but when that is her rewared, I always praise her. It's not an over the top praise, unless it's recall. I praise the heck out of her for that, because I want her to know that is the most important command.
Our relationship is getting better since Leerburg, but I still get lazy obedience at times.
Hi Alex..i dont know if this would help you but what i do is when busy with a training session with my girl i alternate between treat praise and verbal praise.
il let her wonder and sniff around freely..then when I'l call for her by name and command "Meeka, Come!" the 1st time she will look up and look where i am then il say "Come!" and she will run towards me then il command her to sit once done then il give her a treat. then il let her wonder again and maybe run with her...then il do the same when some distance from her il do the routine again with 1 difference, once she has come to me and sit once i told her to il give her praise and rub her and pet her...
we have now moved onto getting her to react to the command 1st time. if i have to repeat any commands she only gets praise once she has done it. but if she does it 1st time without hesitation or me having to repeat or wait on her then she gets a treat.
she is now 18 wks.
it has been working for me.
