we had our 2 year old nephew over this weekend. we had a lot of trouble keeping our 1 year old mal from chasing him and trying to herd him. we saw our nephew about 5 months ago and did not have this problem at all. our nephew was not running from our dog and was not really paying the dog any attention at all.
we kept the dog on a short leash and away from our nephew, but it made the visit uncomfortable to say the least.
I agree, and also this dog should be socialized around children.
I'm really lucky as I have 5 and 3 year old boys and we watch 2 other neighbours kids before and after school. I alway walk my 9 month old Mal over to school to pick the kids up and we wait by the school buses as the kids parade by. The teachers and school admin don't mind her at all on the property as she just sits at heel on end of her leash while we wait for my brood. So my dog gets socialized like crazy with kids and I'm thankful for that.
Was your Mal trying to 'nip' the child or just blocking and feinting? I'm assuming the 2 year old was being his/her normal self so doing the freak out dance. That being said it is probably reasonable if your dog hasn't been exposed regularily to kids that's the way it would act.
Next time your nephew is over for sure your dog should be crated or kenneled until you can introduce the dog to some older less unpredictable children, like anything regarding desensitising your dog to outside stimuli it is all about the repetition.

I socialize my girl as much as I can, but she will still "vibrate" at times around really young kids that are running and being loud.
But she is great with older kids and does not seem to get worked up as much around them.
