I have two GSD's that I have been feeding the BARF diet since this past summer with great results. The 6 yr old female took a little convincing to switch, but loves it now.
The 8 mth old puppy was raised by the breeder on this diet. I have been extremely pleased with the evenness of the puppy's growth rate and overall physical development on this diet.
However, recently his appetite has changed significantly. He's declining to eat what he has eaten in the past. By this I mean he might take a bite or two and walks away.
I've tried feeding him in his kennel, with the other sog, without the other dog. Seems just disinterested.
The raw diet I use consists of the following:
turkey, chicken, lamb (when available),liver (weekly), ground beef, assorted fruits and veggies, kelp, yorgurt, eggs, and alfalfa. The fruits and veggies etc. are mixed in the ground beef.
His overall appearance, energy, behavior, and personality has not changed. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Any input appreciated. Thanks.
How much are you feeding every day? My almost 10 month old female is eating 4 chicken backs per day (except for the 3 veggie meals per week) or a couple of chicken backs and some pork neck bones or beef brisket bones. She is lean and very active. She is the 4th puppy I have raised on BARF.
Lisa, Thanks for responding.
He gets 2 chicken backs or a leg and thigh twice a day, plus a veggie mixture with gd beef once a day. I thought maybe I was over doing the veggie combo so I backed off that a bit. But lately he's been turning his nose up at straight chicken. He did eat two beef ribs last night <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I skipped this mornings feeding hoping he'd be hungry and go for some veggies tonite. No such luck!
I picked up some turkey wings and pork neck bones tonite so I'll give those a try tomorrow. Hey, I don't like chicken much myself, maybe I od'd him on chicken!
It's just odd, he had such a voracious appetite as a youngster. I haven't had puppy in a long time, is there some eating phase I don't know about??
