I just noticed that my 4 month old GSD has a discoloration (greyish black)on her tongue (about the size of a quarter). I wonder what could have caused that? Could she have bitten her tongue and its a bruise?
As I was checking out her mouth, I also noticed that the back part of her gums are grey...is that normal when teething?
Barbara, my pup has four dark gray spots on his tongue which have been there since we got him at 8 weeks old (now 8 months old). Also, when he yawns real wide, you can see that the rear half of his tongue leading down his throat is a solid dark gray. I just assumed that it was a normal pigmentation for him. He is a bullmastiff/pitbull. We had a pure-bred bullmastiff in our home for several months and he had a black spot on his tongue - again, it was perfectly normal according to the vet.

Many GSD's have black spots on their tongues & most with good pigment have dark grey/black gums. The gums start out pink, but darken with age. It's a good thing!!
Oh thank goodness. I always thought a healthy tongue and gums needed to be a nice pink color. She's starting to get her adult teeth in so I was worried we were going to have trouble.
Thanks very much! Here's a new picture.
