Our (GSD male 18mths) is "nervy" and probably through our fought at a failed socialization period(however ROB at triple crown said its in his breeding) Do you think with the E-collar training dvd and some practice I can get him to avoid the temptation to give people the dirty ill eat you look and keep down the hair on his back long enough to get through the distraction part where we have to walk through the people? I was told a judge would dismiss us at any signs of aggression. Is this true and what do you guys think. We love him and he's such a good family dog. That Id never get rid of him for his issues, But i still want to learn about schutzhund and would at least try to get my BH so I can at least get some experience. BTW he has Zero and I mean Zero drives so a BH and maybe an AD is all I can think of being able to do.
thanks guys
You can do it, but it's alot of pressure training with pin point precision in your corrections and timing when walking thru a group. If the dog doesn't do a focused heel then you will have twice the problems. On a focused heel you simply have to get on the dog every single time they even slightly look away from you. But honestly, I know this is the last thing people wanna hear, been there done that.... but you will enjoy learning about Sch so much more with a dog that is sound and driven. Take your current dog as far as is enjoyable for both you and the dog, don't worry about the BH for now... just do what he can do and enjoy him for what he is.
Thanks Mike for the reply, no I don't like to hear it, but unlike others I'm willing to accept that my dogs problems are in fact my problems, and that he is only doing what I allowed earlier in life, or what Ive trained into him through bad mechanics and inexperienced raising techniques. Also I've read some of it is genetics. But your right, hes just going to be a loud security system. But I'm still going to try to train further through obedience and maybe try to learn how to teach him to track, if hes willing. I wont seek out a club here in Georgia, but Im gonna try to learn more about training with him so that when I get a new pup one day I wont make all the same mistakes. Thanks again Mike.
