HOW can I get my 7 month old GSD to stop eating her own poop? Short of keeping her on a leash all the time (which makes it tough to really play with her) I can't get her to stop. We even tried putting a muzzle on her for that purpose alone - but the second I turn my back she smashes the muzzle down into a fresh pile of poop until she's able to eat it! She seems to have a very sensitive stomach & the poop eating doesn't help with that.
Kira, my GSD pup, now a year old, is/was a voracious poop eater. The only thing that worked was waiting with the shovel and immediately picking it up. She was fed kibble at the time, Canidae. She would also eat my other GSD's, which wasn't particularly surprising since Grace has EPI and doesn't digest her food well. She did this until she was 11 months old and I switched her to raw.
She does not eat poop anymore...worth every ounce of effort that feeding raw takes IMHO, aside from any other benefits (and there are many!). Occasionally if she is in a mood, she will pretend to want to "snack" but she's just trying to get my attention.
Hope this helps! I know how frustrating it can be!
My dogs also had this nasty habit of eating their poop and weren't too discriminate over whose poop it was when they were being fed kibble (Nutro, Iams). As soon as I switched my dogs to raw, that stopped that habit immediately. If you're already feeding raw, perhaps maybe they might be missing a mineral or vitamin though I don't know how that could be if they are getting a balanced diet.
Rosalind, add 1 or 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling) to each meal. You can put it on the side if she'll eat it that way, if not then mix it in. This is what helped my pup stop when he wasn't on leash. I first tried having him on leash when in the back yard to potty so I could take him away from it but that gets to be a pain in the neck, having a leash on just for that. The pumpkin worked. It was mentioned in a post some time ago by Carol Boche I believe, so I tried it.
