Hello,
On April 23 one of my females "queen" had 11 pups. This is the 2nd litter I have had from her. The first time she had 5. After the shock of having so many, I pro actively decided to supplement the pups with a bottle. I made my mind up that loosing a pups was unacceptable. I used the puppy formula that Mr Frawley put on the website.
10 oz of Goat milk, 1 egg yoke, spoon of corn syrup, mayonnaise, and plain yogurt, & water.
I found letting the mixture settle for about 30 minutes reduced the tiny air bubbles. I also did not have a thermometer so I would warm the formula and squeeze a few drops on my skin like old school baby bottle test.
I also found that the hardest thing was keeping the pups separated after each one was fed. I got my children to help with this and keep the ones that had already eat separate.
I'm not sure if it was necessary, but I would also burp the pups after they feed.
Every pups would take the bottle great and they are all doing great. I did not have a scale to weigh them this time, but I will have one before my next litter. I found that it was better to give each pup a fixed amount - stopping even before they were finished because some pups were more hogish that others. This way I did not over or under feed any pup. However, as they are still all also on the moma, some seem to get more from her. If I seen that a pup looked leaner, I would give it a couple cc's more.
I wanted to say thanks Mr Frawley for the formula ingredients.
I wish my breeder had taken the time to do that with her litters. She took the mom away from her litter at 5 weeks, cause the large litter was draining her dry. But I've been told that some of my struggles with my pup may actually stem from the lack of the mother and her training from 5 to 7 weeks.
I'm glad that your not taking the easy way out. Make sure that your pup's families know how important that is.
