Anyone here dry beef for their dogs? Dog Jerky of sorts.. I am looking for recipies to make as tracking bait.
He is the only dog I know that will pick up a hot dog and spit it back out on the track. My TD didn't believe me till she saw it with her own eyes.
I hate the smell of liver cooking so I want to find something else that I can use. The liver biscotti Ed is selling is a little too pricey for a dog that needs food every-other footstep or so.
I have a dehydrator and some round roast here.. I just need a recipe...
Recipe? Sheeyoot. Jerky turns out great just by letting the strips dry in an oven overnight set at about 125 (if yours goes that low). You do, however, have to slice it thin and "jerk" it. Gotta increase the surface area to air ratio, lest the juicy enzymes and bacteria starting kicking in first.
Ok...looking at my current oven, it only goes down to 170. In that case, I'd leave it open just a crack. But as Ron Popeil says: "Just set it, and forget it."
Of course, I can't vouch for the canine palate. But if he doesn't like it you're, at worst, stuck with a tasty human treat.
Yeah, I have a recipe for human beef jerkey... I make it all the time (my beef is in the marinade right now) But I don't know if I can just dry the beef plain for him... all that crap in the human kind is not good for poochies.
I can't see where it would be any worse than it is raw, and he tolerates that just fine.
I know the soy sauce and salt and whatnot "cures" the meat for human consumption.
That sounds like a great recipe. About how big are the chunks, and about how long does it take for them to cook fully?
Hmmm,
Don't like cats.
Don't like horses.
Don't like jerky.
You're beginning to sound like my polar opposite! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Well, you do like coffee, so I guess that redeems you a little. Just a little. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I try to get 'em as small as I can, depends on the cut of meat Like about 1/2 inch cubes. They only take a few minutes to cook. As soon as they get a little dark around the edges and are hardish. I sprinkle again with a dash of garlic salt to finish.
They really have a lot of odor, so I don't use the bacon if I'm laying track either.
Correction, I hate cats and I hate horses. And the only thing I like about pigs, sheep, cows, or chickens is that I get to eat them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I'm not really an animal person, I like shepherds mostly. . .everything else. . .take it or leave it.
