Today I'm going to drive around the neighborhood near where I found him, see if I can find a sign posted of a lost dog (or Maltese). I did some searches on the internet yesterday to see if anyone posted of a lost Maltese. Maybe I can find the owner - they should probably know what happened to him. I guess.
I'm keeping a lookout for elected seats on the Animal Control board, like Will said. Maybe I can get on one day, maybe do some good.
I think the agency Louis was thinking of is the Arizona Humane Society, which is here in Phoenix and on the show Animal Planet Heroes: Phoenix. They're the first one I contacted, no one available to come to the dog before 6AM. He died before then.
As far as things happening for a reason, I'm sure sometimes I don't know the reason, but in this case I do. I usually drive my son to work in the morning, we only have one car and I like to keep it during the day. I took a different street on the way back than I normally do. That's how I found the little dog. I was in time to keep him from being hit again, laying in the street. So thank God for that, and like so many of you said, he had me there to be with him for his last few minutes.
I think many of you will understand this I hope: in my heart I felt like he was my dog when I was petting him and talking to him. Kind of like I took over ownership or something when I gave him affection.
All your thoughts and advice have been very comforting, thank you so much. The burial advice will be heeded if there's a next time. I just thought of this: cremation is another option too. That way the dog can stay with me until the people who do that pick him up. It's better than a mass grave. The mass grave idea sickens me.
Thanks for the heads up Kimberly, I went to that website and think I may have found the owner. He sent me pics of his dog and it might be his dog. It was a little hard to tell from his pics.
One more thing I learned for next time, "I" should have taken a picture of the dog.
Just wanted to update and include the last tip about taking a picture.
