I am looking for ideas for building a summer run/kennel for my dog at my summer job. My dog sleeps indoors, but must be kenneled outdoors at work. This is a picture of his winter kennel, obviously this is not ideal for summer:
Maybe you have pictures of what a good summer kennel/run might look like.
I am not going to lie to you, I am looking to be price sensitive here
The kennel/run will be non permanant (summer only).
The ground will likely be packed dirt.
I am looking for something that will let the dog move around a bit (6x8 to 10X12?)
Something that will provide a spot to get up off the dirt if wet, and a spot to get out of the rain/sun.
THis dog is not an escape artist, has 4ft fence at home, and never jumps/digs.
I have been looking a bit at modular kennels. They are expensive and I don't seem to be able to find any in western Canada (don't want to ship from US). I wonder if it would be better to build one on my own, or bite the bullet and by a cheap modular.
I don't have any pics of a summer run, but if you go to Home Depot or similar in your area, you can buy the chain link and build it. Add some wooden posts to hang a wavy type plastic cover and that would be it. I think they may even sell a kit, or you can copy the kit & buy similar materials.
I have an article with photos somewhere on my web site that shows what we did here. Its very nice, not expensive and you cant see the runs because of the vines
Its somewhere in the list of training articles I dont have time to look it up right now.
Home depot does sell a portable kennel that goes together in a few minutes. It's made of 6' chainlink and has one gate. Last one I saw was about 189.00. Doesn't have a roof though.
Thank you all that replied here and by PM. I think I have gotten some very good ideas and possibilities.
I thought I checked the Home Depot website, but couldn't find that kennel. I think I will call them to see if they actually have them at the one closest to me (couple hrs away). Otherwise I think I culd build some pannels by myself (okay I will let the hubby help )
Eds article and the pics some sent really helped me to visulalize.
One thing I had not thought of is worms. I don't expect him to releave himself in there, or get fed in there, and I had thought of putting a plywood raised deck with some kind of shade/roof over it.
Can he get worms just from laying in the dirt? I have no worm experience, and have not wormed my dog since he was a pup. I am wondering if I need to go with patio stones.
