I'm looking for ideas.
I have approx. 200' of 6' welded wire fencing along the front that runs along the road. Recently they built several homes on my road. Now neighbor kids walk up and down, run dirt bikes, motor scooters and just hang out on the road in front. Well, I need to figure out how or what?? I can run along this 200' of fencing that would be about 3' tall. That will keep my dogs from seeing these kids and barking and running the fence all day. I can't use 200' of 3' tarps or shade cloth cause are daily winds are too strong and they wouldn't last. I can't afford to add 200' of privacy fencing in front of my fencing either. Does anyone have any ideas of what is at least 3 foot tall, will last outdoors year around and create a screen or block so dogs and kids can't tease eachother? I know there are 3' tall concrete barricades (too pricey) also 3' cedar fencing (not available here and also pricey) So...any ideas please??
I would suggest those plastic inserts that slide into the links but you can still see through them some. Even if you set something up that the dogs cant see through (what kind of dogs?) they may run the fence or jump and bark anyway. Try the invisible fence or an ecollar. Ultimately, you want them to watch the goings on but stop the running.
A suggestion that is nicer to look at but takes a little longer, is a hedge. Depending on where you live, there are different types that grow in about any style you want. They also provide habitat for birds and small animals, as well as a sound buffer, wind break, etc.
Deanna,
Planting would be nice, but planting is out of the question here where I'm at in the dunes of Wyoming. I already have 26 trees to care for and it took me 22 years to get them going after losing over 80. Getting water out to the road where I need the screening/block along the road would be out of the question also.
Besides that, I'm talking about now/this month since the kids just got out of school and are up and down the road all day. It's bringing way too much attention to my dogs. I am looking for a cheap material, like I said, 3' tall, cheap and easy to put up that is weather hardy.
Howard,
I have 5 GSD's, and 1 rescue Lab right now. They are high drive and when anything gets moving down the road they get to moving too and vocal. I can't use those plastic inserts, they are designed for Chain link fencing and I have 1000' of 6' Sheffield style horse style fencing if you know what that is. Another problem is, since the kids got out of school last week, the dogs running the fence lines with my soft "blow" sand in this area, they churn up the sand, it blows away, and it is also exposing the T Posts in the ground and may loosen them as well. I need to find something, 3' high, maybe a foot wide? to keep them away from the fencing also. The best way is build another 6' cedar privacy fence in front of my fencing for privacy and then pour cement the 200' along the road UNDER my fencing. But, I can afford to do neither right now. Just thought someone else may have had to block/screen in between kennels or runs and had come up with cheap outdoor solutions.
Thank you both for your imput though.
Well, one thing that works excellent is 4 ft (or taller) chainlink fence that is actually laid right on the ground. It keeps dogs from digging and they wont run on it b/c it hurts their feet. If you contact a fence company they will give it to you for free if you haul it away from a job they are working on.
Too many dogs for an e collar and expensive for the invisible fence. Thats all I got other than to cordone off the yard so they cant get to the front fence.
Jan, by Sheffield style fencing I'm assuming you mean the picket style wood fencing? If so, only thing I can think of is to nail 3 foot high (or 6 foot high) wood slats in the spaces between the existing slats. Make sure you get a size that completely covers the spaces. Depending on where your cross frames are on the fence, you would nail the slats to the cross frames.
If you go that way, remember that lumber sizes aren't exactly as they're listed, for example lumber said to be 1" x 2" is actually 3/4" x 1 1/2". Measure the spaces in between your existing slats, go to a lumber yard and see what they have to match it. You may be able to use a cheap 1/4" to 1/2" plywood and have them cut it up for you for a labor charge.
You might be able to find a cheaper material than wood, but I doubt it. You might consider a privacy fabric that's sometimes put on fencing. It may be cheaper (not sure) but it may not completely block view, you can still see movement of people, I think.
I wouldn't put up anything that is 3' high by 1' wide, either inside or outside the fence. That makes only a 3' fence for a dog to scale by jumping onto the 1' wide solid (?) footing. This is if I'm understanding your image of the 3' high by 1' wide structure. If put outside the fence, you may have kids getting up on it.
