Canned mackerel is inexpensive and easy to feed, but is the sodium content not an issue? I've almost bought a few cans a couple of times, but look at that and change my mind. Anybody have any feedback on that? I'd like to have it on hand for when the husband or kids have to feed the dogs. Making the diet easy makes my life easier, if you know what I mean.
Well, I look at it like this. Feeding raw, you are not going to be feeding a lot of salts. Once a week feeding canned mackeral or tuna or salmon isn't going to hurt the dog. Look at the sodium content in kibble.. Oh, that is right, you can't cuz they don't list it....
All living things need salts. I don't know about you but I don't salt anything else I am giving my dog...
My dogs had mackerel tonight. Canned. They absolutely love it, and it is easy when you are tired, or to let someone else feed....
I wouldn't do it as a regular staple of your diet - but I do add some canned sardine or tuna in water or mackeral when I grab it - fresh or even frozen would be best, but is good in a pinch or as a treat. No worse than other treats we routinely give, and much more to add than say the odd pizza crust, PB sandwich, triscuit, commercial biscuit - etc. I wouldn't sweat it, and would sweat it less than raw bones. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
