Today I fed my 15 month old german shepherd a fresh raw chicken quarter (transitioning to raw diet from kibble). It was an amazing sight to see him play with the food first and then eat it...crunching the bones and everything. The question is...he almost immediately vomited the food up and then re-ate the food again. Is this normal? He seems fine and it has been several hours now...I am watching him closely.
My male shepherd ate his first whole rabbit when he was around 6 months old and didn't quite chew it up enough (he gulped huge pieces of it down).
He threw it up within minutes and re-ate it. The second time around he was careful to rip up the meat into smaller chunks before swallowing and digested it just fine.
It only took that one time and he learned to chew his food better.
It's a completely natural behaviour for dogs and you did the right thing in allowing him to eat it up again.
I try to feed my dog stuff that is bigger than his head to prevent gulping. If it will fit in his mouth he thinks its swallowable.
This weekend he got a huge piece of meat off the even larger piece and tried to take it down. Of course it came back up and like Yuko's dog he chewed it better the second time.
