I'm training my dog in both Schutzhund and AKC obedience. We're getting ready for a CDX and a SchH I. The only "conflict" I've come across is in the retrieve over a jump. In AKC only one command ("Bring/Fetch/whatever") is allowed. In Schutzhund you give two commands ("Hup" then "Bring").
My dog is a very enthusiastic retriever and loves to jump, and so far my main problem has been getting him to stay until I give ANY command. I think if I just omit the "Hup" in the AKC ring, he'd probably fly over the jump anyway. But does anyone who's done both (Will comes to mind...) have any words of wisdom on how to make my dog understand if the dumbbell goes over the jump, he has to jump whether or not I give a "Hup" command?
I do both AKC and SchH and never had a problem. The "bring" is the command to get whatever I have thrown and they just learned that if there is a jump/wall in between me and the object, you jump/climb it ;-) I tend to think that the hup command is almost white noise to my dogs since they are focused on getting the item thrown.
Ditto with Ingrid! My SchH I GSD will be going for the first leg of his CDX this weekend.
I could probably holler "POPCORN" and he'd retrieve anything I throw.
If the jumps are taught separate from the retrieve, and are solid, they will be nothing more then something the dog has to go over in order to get the dumbell.
In Sch I use the "hup" and "bring" commands. In AKC I use only the "bring".
I've not seen any confusion in my dog.
If your having problems getting him to stay, then the stay isn't solid. That's totally separate from the jump OR the retrieve!
Thanks to both of you. I haven't run into a problem yet, but just wanted to know of any potential pitfalls. Doesn't sound like I need to be worried. Oh, and we're working on that stay
