Hi
Can any one tell me what Heartworm is and i have read that you vaccinate over in some countries tp prevent it
Over in England or here in Belgium no one owning dogs has heard of it so does this mean this problem can be only in certain Countries
Steve, I've gone through heart worm with two dogs in the last 40 yrs. It's transmitted by a misquito. The larva develope in the blood of the dog and mature in the heart. In the later stages, the heart is actually blocked up with the worm mass and the dog can easily die.
The treatment can also be quite hard on the dog. It must remain as quiet as possible for 5-6 weeks because as the heart worms die off and disolve, they can be pumped into the lungs with to much exertion from the dog.
The treatment also involves injections of an arsnic compound. That initself can kill a dog.
I use HeartGuard preventative, once a month, all year long and my present dog STILL had heartworm about a year ago. We caught it early with his yearly blood test and he's fine now.

Hi Connie
I live in Limburg, East side of Belgium near the Ardennes
I have tried to find out if there is this problem of Heartworm about but no luck todate. I will have to contact my Vet to see if he knows, if he does, then he has never mentioned it to me and he is looking after out two dogs should they need him any time
Steve,
Is there a parvo problem where your at? Parvo can live in the soil up to 2 years. We're having problems here in the Sacramento area right now. I was kind of wondering if it like heartworm is prone to different areas more than others.

Steve, I am told that heartworm is a problem in the south of france, italy, maybe spain and some other areas. I am told that I don't need to use the heartworm preventative in belgium, although personally coming from somewhere that heartworm is a very possible problem to have, its very difficult for me to accept that I don't need to give my dogs heartgard in Belgium. If I could get it easily I would probably use it anyway. Its a once a month oral doggy treat looking thing, the brand name is HeartGard.

Hello Mike
I will ask the Vet if it is obtainable in Belgium, but if its anything as rare as Chicken Backs, and Necks then it will not be. But i will ask him
