I was wondering what you all thought of "meat shavings". They are pieces of meat that are accumulated in the slicer at the end of the day. I have a friend who is a butcher and he says I can have all the meat shavings I want. I can feed that instead of ground beef. Has anyone used it?
Of course you know to make sure the fat content is relatively low, as I've seen the "shavings" from the butcher here, and he's gOOD! Lotttta fat and toothpicks of meat throughout...probably depends on what cuts they're doing.
I use the shavings myself, My dogs love it. I get around 25lbs a week. I also feed chicken backs and necks i buy them from a local poultry dealer i get 50lbs for 15 dollars, Plus he gives me all of his wing tips, Wich is appox. 50 to 75lbs every 2 weeks. I had to buy another freezer just for dog food but thats ok.
Nice. I am going to do that then. I AM lucky to have a butcher friend. I'll make sure and take off all the extra fat. Even if half the bag is fat, it's still free. I can rotate it with ground beef/turkey now and then. Either way, it will save me some money.

I started with all butcher people-prices, and the more I frequented the same store, same guy, the more things came my way via his freezer.
One thing about deals on all-muscle-meat (aside from the fat thing already mentioned) is that we want to be careful that the nice free stuff doesn't encourage us to feed more meat-without-bones than we would otherwise.
