Like Yuko, I used a prong on my GSD at that age, for inappropriate pack behaviors that could have dangerous consequences. I moved to a prong for those behaviors when it became clear that nothing else was going to break through his focus. If used correctly, it can (and should be) so effective that you don't need many corrections at all.
However, at 9 months old, I still don't use a prong for obedience training my dog...It would be counter-productive.
I've spoken to you previously, Steve, and was under the impression that you wanted a well-mannered family pet. For a working dog, many techniques are different than for those of a pet, and the good news is that there is more info on that here on this site than I've seen anywhere else.
I'm really glad that you were finally able to find a trainer to work with you. If Fred has what it takes to be a great sport dog, then you won't be sorry you went down that path. I think you AND your dog will benefit from it.

well here is how I see it. you go to a trainer because they know more than you. If you dont want to follow the trainers program get a different trainer.. just my opinion. My bitch is now 14 month and has never had a pinch on yet. doesnt mean she wont, just not yet. good luck...

Hi
I am very happy with the fellow i have helping us with the Pup It is just that i am new to GSDs and He speaks Dutch No English, i speak a little Dutch and a lot of English so sometimes it is hard to get across the right words or meanings
I only wanted to use the Prong to get him Walking Correct He does this okay for two thirds of a walk then starts to play up a bit, This is the only reason i bought the Prong collar for nothing else, But the Trainer says no' and No' it will be. I do not want to get another trainer just to do as i ask that is pointless for me and the Dog and will achive nothing,
Plus the fact Trainers are not two a penny over here its a job to find one, and the one i have is a good one in my eyes. No' i am happy to do as he says.
