Hi all,
I got Ed's DVD and watched it completely. Started my 1 1/2 year Dobe (Schutzhund prospect) on the dummy collar for 2 weeks. Today I started using the remote by just incrementing from 0 - a slight reaction.
What I didn't expect is her response to it. I thought she would look around when she first started to feel it or even slightly yelp if I got too high. However, she just froze and stared. At first I thought she didn't feel anything but after 2 more increases, I could see her muscles tightening.
I immediately lowered the remote level and distracted her to get her to move. She seemed back to normal so I started low again but this time asked her to come over to me. When she didn't, I said 'No' and nicked her. After that she happily came over and was acting great, happy, normal.
Has anyone had that experience with the freezing? Freaked me out, cause I don't want to do anything wrong with her.
Bruno froze. I think a proper setting will just get the ears to twitch. My sisters great dane jumped about a foot in the air and took off in the other direction. She didn't watch the video or follow any training so didn't have a line on him and it took awhile to get him back. Over time they'll get used to it and the only way you'll know they got nicked is the do what you commanded. You'll probably be able to adjust the stim level down a tad once they know the scoop with the little box on their neck.
I wouldn't tell her no if she doesn't come. I think "No" is to stop inappropriate or unwanted behavior, not to initiate a proper response. Tell her come and give a nick a second or 2 after if she doesn't comply. I go from 1 nick to 2 nick's, then short continuous stims. If he still doesn't comply he may be distracted so I boost the stim level a bit. It's an awsome tool once you get used to it.
After wearing the collar for 3 weeks, my dog did the "blink" like on Ed's video. I did it again and she blinked and started looking on the ground for whatever bit her. She was a bit scared to move around, so I had to encourage that. The hardest part, I think, is testing out their stim levels because your are giving them a correction for no reason at all. Once, they learn the correction is coming from you, and ignore a command, it's easier to use it. I still have quite a bit to learn on using it.
