This Question is not about dog fighting. It is about a police dog and the Risk of police work on the job.
FOR EXAMPLE:Police dogs are trained on how to protect it's self from criminals but what about other threats like a suspects dog or a vicious animal that tries to hurt the K9.Is there no preventive measures or training for this.
And for the record it breaks my heart to know innocent dogs are forced to fight and I do not want to talk about such depressing things on this forum.
I cant say anything for Police dogs But for military working dogs if the situation comes up where there is a dog coming at my MWD showing intent to fight we shoot the dog coming at us. Period. Of corse no one wants to shoot a dog but it is better then there dog hurting are dog, possibly getting are dog infectid with something.
EDIT: if i just broke the no talking about dog fighting rule, sorry, feel free to delete this post.
Nicole, from the management side; the police dog is a piece of equipment, it would be protected the same way any other piece of equipment would be protected. From the handler's perspective; It's a handler/dog team. The handler is well versed in taking care of his partner. From the General Order side; our general reads; the handler will remove the dog from a dangerous situation if time permits. If that's not possible, the handler will use the force necessary to protect the dog.

Nicole,
After reading this i saw i probably should have put a bit more detail and tact into my response. In the military we do everything we can to avoid putting are dogs in a unsafe place. If we are near are truck we will put are dog up before anything else. If we cant do that we will use all lesser means we can until we have to put down the other dog. The army see's MWD's at equipment also and will do what they need to do to protect the army's investment.
