I've a bit of a worry..that perhaps I need addressing...
My GSD pup, Xena, will be going into boarding kennels whilst I'm away on vacation/holiday at the end of this month.
We're going away for a week and she'll be kenneled during my time away. The place where she's going I've been using for several years and I'm as happy and confident about them as you can be.
When she goes into the kennels she'll be 4 and a half months old. I've owned her since she was 2 months 3 weeks old.
I'm a bit worried/anxious/concerned that the experience will be negative for her and that it'll damage her early training, conditioning, bonding with me etc etc..
I know that I'm best introducing her to kennels as she's young as she is going to spend a week or two in them each year...but I'm concerned nevertheless...
Any thoughts, good or bad, I'd like to hear them...
If there is no way to take her with you, and you trust the kennel, I'm thinking have a load of super tasty treats when you return, work overtime on bonding and you'll be fine.
Does the kennel do any play and treat stuff with the dog or are they neutral with basic cares (food, walks, etc) during the dog stay? I have no experience with this, but imagine I'd want the caretakers to be very neutral. Hopefully, others with experience can say more.
I had a similar situation with my dog. Two weeks after I got him at 12 weeks old, I had to go out of town for a week. Followed by two shorter trips in the following 2 months. It seemed to take him a long time (2 months?) to really bond to me, but that may have been his personality rather than the kenneling. In any case, once he did - and I can remember the exact moment - he did so with full force. So, at least for this random sample of one, there were no long-term effects.
We got our female German Shepherd at 4 months...at 6-1/2 months we boarded her for a planned vacation. While she was upset at being boarded...she was just fine when we got back home.
