For those of you out there with pups, young dogs, and/or those of you who have had young ones, what's your tracking schedule?
How many times a week, times, what do you use for treats? Length of tracks? Additional thoughts about tracking, laying tracks, triumphs, difficulties, etc...broad discussion fine.
I'm working Cato now just 2 times a week (sometimes 3), early mornings, 3 tracks 10 to 15 feet. Generally using cooked liver or gizzards. Seems highly motivated although will miss 2 sometimes 3 steps and needs a redirect. Haven't yet worked with my trainer on tracking due to scheduling.

When I start tracking with a dog I like to track every day (if possible) for about the first 10 days.

I track 4 days a week, the puppy I have here at home tracks 3 to 4 times a week.I think using Gizzards is not a good idea, gizzards are hard and harder for them to easily eat on the track. You want something that is easier ( kinda melt in your mouth treats)to eat.I use cooked (boiled)chicken meat (breast or thighs) small little pieces,my pup will be 4 months on July 17th and she tracks a 30 feet to 40 feet tracks.I do a horseshoe track.I am starting to connect another horseshoe to the first one at this time. She is a nice tracker but at times a little fast, I like a methodical tracker.I am going to add more turns on our track to slow her down a bit and use less bate.I have done so far every step (bate) to now every other step and see if she slows down a bit.
I trakc everyday almost in the spring and fall but in the summer here it's hard to track that much , at midnight it is still 98 degrees!

As for the gizzards, I boil them and cut them up into tiny pieces, he LOVES them and they seem to go down with his breath! He's (IMverynoviceO) a tracking fool, as when I run out to lay the track, of course I jump as far as I can into it, because when I go back to get him, he'll get on my track, nose down and pull along just my regular footsteps! He's done that several times. Is this normal?

Michele I don't quiet understand it, he pulls you through the track you just laid?
When I lay my track ,I step off at the end and walk way around the track so that I don't cross walk into my track, my track is going, not coming back.
As for gizzard, what ever works..

After laying out the tracks, I go back to the car to get him. He appears to pick up on my footprint scent I made walking to lay the first track. In fact today, I tested him a bit by walking off (5 feet or so) from where I entered the grass to walk out and go lay tracks...he wandered over, nose to the ground to the area where I initially entered the grass to go lay the tracks then step by step, looking up occasionally, "leading the way", essentially tracking (with no treats) to where I laid the first one. Does that make sense? He's only done this a couple of times that I've noticed. Now I'm just planning to take him a totally different route than what I took to get there...???

And yes, tension is on when he is doing his regular track.

That sounds like a good tracker , I have always liked a dog that just knew where the track started without indication. I don't use a flag for the most part I have been lucky that my dogs simply find the start on their own.At times I use a marker but they always know where I started the track. As soon as I put the long tracking line on they just know what we are doing.
Michele it's sounds like your pup knows "tracking" i would go longer on your track especially if he tracks good for the track you put out now and does it well.Don't rush to take the food away, food on trakcs is a good thing and a motivation for tracking.I don't want to rush things but it sounds like you can lay longer track. Are you laying straight track?, snake shape? What?
Also too no matter what you track with (treat)change it often to keep him guessing...

I'm thinking he's a good tracker too! Very exciting to me, in fact, I am off to go lay out some tracks now. My main problem is wanting to hurry up through laying them because I want to get to the "fun" part...I always find myself literally running back to the jeep to get the dog!!! (does it show that this is the first dog I've done this with??? )
I'll stretch them out to 25-30 feet straight first, then start putting some curves in. Probably will try for everyday for a stint too, just to get "myself" conditioned too... (huge part of training dog, huh?) Will be getting with my trainer on this too, it's just been one thing or another recently...

Happy Fourth!!
Don't forget to wait at least 15 minutes before you get him out to track, after you lay your last step, time yourself ,15 minutes.
I'm glad to hear you enjoy tracking , sometimes it is the hardest thing to get Schutz.members to do!
