one word of caution, folks...bad guys probably read this stuff, too...be careful about giving away too many details.
I know, I know...I'm paranoid
Maybe a little
If they can find this on the Leerburg site they can find it a tonne of places on the web. These types of explinations are widely available online and in SAR books. Heck, they could even order videos from this site if they wanted to find out more!
Nothing said in this thread is any kind of secret. IMO most criminals are not that big into planning And if they are...they would need more than the info provided here IMO as there are many variables to scent work not discussed.
This is only my opinion of course, maybe not fair for me to say as I live in a town where people still leave their cars and houses unlocked. Yikes...now will they move here because I said that? Now I am paranoid

Mike.....
Your funny ....
Just to let all you hunters (this includes myself) know......you know those jumpsuits we all buy that are "specially made" to "lock in" your scent???? (I DO NOT have one)
Well, we trailed a friend of ours three miles and he had one on.....

I just had to google that right away, never having heard of that!!! I would have called BS right away on those things! (As I bet you did!) I am not surprised one bit the dog had no probem on this. In fact this article states that they did do studies on search dogs and these suits! http://www.outdoorscentral.com/artman/publish/article_169.shtml
Edit: Of course the ones I looked up also left exposed skin. The article talks only of persperation odours and does not even address the skin cell rafting issue.
One thing that sort of alerted me was the last week here in Texas we've had a ton of rain...an inmate in a Texas prison was out TRAINING dogs to do scent detection and was caught in flood waters and drown.
I had NO IDEA that the prison system used inmates to train their dogs. To me, that's a really dumb idea...it teaches inmates the weaknesses of the dogs.

Yuko,
Update on the GSD pups.....
They are doing well and growing up nicely. Female is doing well at cadaver training, however her brother has a serious aversion to it and I have washed him from the program.
I am working with him on live find work, but he seems a little weak nerved and things that bother him, he will come back and sit at my feet. He does not run like he is scared, he just comes back. If I take him to investigate he will investigate but not on his own.
I think he will make a great pet for an experienced GSD person. He likes people and approaches them willingly. So that is my goal for him although I will continue to work live find exercises with him and obedience. The males in this line were slow to mature so I am still trying to remain hopeful.
The female is "balls out" ALL the time, so much in fact that getting her to focus on me is a challenge. But she will range, investigate and she uses her nose well.
I am working on her focus right now.
The hard part is that I am not a food reward person for odor detection and these pups are not very toy driven. They will chase and grab toys but possessiveness is low. I am working on that daily. I have some duck toys that I fill with food and they have to work to get the food out, which is making possessiveness better, however I think that they both will remain food driven.
It is a shame about this male. He is a gorgeous boy and seems really willing to please, but he will not work in my cadaver program.
Pics and vids soon......
