I might have talked to a few of you i am pretty new to the forum. I am currently in the army and work with a MWD and he was trained to sit and stare at me the handler, recently we have switched over to the dog sitting on source and stareing at where the oder is coming from. In my humble opinion this training method is MUCH better. I wont get in to all the reasons but the first and foremost is the fact the dog will stare at the source and not move, when he looks to me he is going to move to get in a better position to receive his reward. And you can be more exact when you tell CID/MPI or the Detective where to look for the drugs.
That being said.
I am not sure how they are training the dogs back at the school house so hopefully one of the trainers there will see this thread and they might be able to use this idea.
Now what the wall is, is well for starters a wall. I would say when building this wall (yes some assembly needed.. ok ok you will need to make it from scratch) 10ft high and 20-25 feet long. Now you are going to need to drill maybe 20 holes with another set of holes above it so that way there is always two holes right next to each other always one on top of the other. now with these holes your going to have PVC pipe coming out of the back so that way you can stick your training aid's in the bottom hole and what the top hole is for someone else to chuck your dogs reward though. Now what this will do is teach your dog that the reward is coming from source and not from you and thus your dog will stare at where he thinks the oder/reward is.
Now this isn't for all time use but excellent for training a dog on a new oder or braking your dogs old habits or when you are training a new dog.
I hope this can help a department out. Also i got this idea when i was working with a German trainer that was helping train the KPS (Kosovo Police Service) K9 section to my understanding this is how they start there dogs off (this can be used for explosives too)
Micheal, I can't speak for the military and the way they currently conduct business today, but we were using the wall in the military in the 70's and 80's. It's been around for a long time as well as scent boxes, glass jars, and several other methods. The "sit and stare" is not all that new, although it's a bit anal for me, it is neat to see.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
*shrugs* like i said i don't know, I have never seen it before, all i have used was box's (line four up and yada yada)
The first time i heard about it was two months ago so i wasn't sure how widely used it was, its a simple idea so i figured it has been out there a while. I cant speak for the army either considering i am not sure what they do at the school house.
