SLC, UTAH. I tried to join a local club. They were very nice but they didn't seem interested in me. I kept going to practice to watch. They evaluated my dog and said there is deffinatly somthing there worth exploring. I can understand with me being a newbie and all. I got to start somewhere. Just like they did. I'm so willing to learn and give it all I got. Time and effort. Let me know.
Did they TELL you they weren't interested in you? I'm sure they know everyone has to start somewhere. You now, like them, whenever they started. I'm in the same boat as you right now, but it's been over 2 mos and I'm still going to the practices, even though I haven't been "formally" invited to join. Yet.
They didn't tell me not to come back. Maybee I read them wrong. They were all really nice. I just got that I'd rather you not be here vibe. Kinda put out... ya know. I'd rather train with the circus than to be somewhere I'm not wanted. I think I'll give it another go. I'll attend for a month or two and then ask them to take a vote, weather or not I have somthing to contribute to the club or not. Thanks for your advice.
Keep going Eric. Don't give up. The group I'm trying to join are all really nice too. I'm sure that what it is, is that, these groups probably get a lot of people interested, but aren't committed to go to all the practices and share the work and effort to help the other members as well as themselves. They are just weeding out the people who aren't as dedicated as they are. Keep going, when they see you are different than the others, you will get invited. I'm sure they'd love to have new blood, new help and new ideas.
Erick:
NEWBIE new-bie new-bIE--they don't care about you, (justkidding ) only your dog. They said your pup was worth looking into, right?
I'm a newbie to SchH too...and I will say, if you are working with the types that I am, who are focused on National level stuff...it is sometimes hard to feel "at ease". Just try to keep training principles in the forefront.
I truly admire those with years of experience...keep in mind, their level is one you (or I) cannot comprehend, can only imagine, respect and learn from...and *someday*, if we do it right, we can be the ones saying "yeah, you're dog's got something there, now back to training" (for me, that will be years, if ever)
I totally agree with what Alex wrote, as I think it comes natural to clubs and the dog circles to not get overly enthused about a new member, as they've seen their fair share of the ones who just leave....it's a kind of matter of fact, if you're in, you're in and you're there and willing to work...listen, learn and work.
