We just started feeding raw to our two dogs: a 15-month-old GSD and a 9-year-old Golden. We did lots of research, and even our vet is enthusiastic about it. In the end, the most help is Ed's sample menu for a 65-pound-female because both our dogs are! So we'd like to follow it fairly closely but don't have a source for (cheap) canned sardines or mackeral. HOWEVER the local food bank offered me a whole huge case of tuna that is now about a week over its sell date.
Is tuna ok for dogs? Is it an acceptable alternative to mackeral?
(I'm not even asking the stale-dating question, cuz I'm sure it's fine in a can.)
Thanks
Tuna has much higher levels of heavy metal contaminents (such as mercury) compared to sardines and mackarel that are lower on the food chain.
It's ok to feed it, but I would limit it. I try to avoid it with my dogs as much as possible.
Health Canada (I believe) does recommend quite a strict limit of tuna consumption in women of child-bearing age (mercury accumulates in your system over time). If the levels are bad enough to be avoided by humans, it's probably not healthy for dogs in massive amounts either
You should be fine if you don't overdo the tuna. However, if you have a potential breeding female, be careful with fish like tuna. Accumulated mercury in the body can cause quite a bit of neurological damage to a foetus.
Congrats on the switch to raw!!!
I hope you'll make a post introducing yourself and your dogs (a photo of the shepherd would be nice )

Thank you so much guys! (Especially for the speedy reply!) This is a spayed bitch (long-haired). My daughter got her just for entering into the sport of Schutzhund.
Anyway, I'll take the freebie tuna and only give it a couple of times a month!
