Please look at this picture, you can see on my dog from the shine of the sun where his rib cage ends, a section where his waist indents and then his thighs.
I see what you mean and I don't see that on Koda. He IS very round.
I decided to purchase an above ground pool and my husband is going to build some wide steps for the dogs so they can get in. I think this will be a great way to cool off the dogs after a walk and a fun place for me to exercise them even more.
I also want to mention that Koda has been kept in his crate for two days with the exception of course of walking him and letting him do his business in my yard. I put his food bowl in his crate but he refuses to eat. I gave him ten minutes to eat then removed the bowl. He drinks water but that's it. I know a dog will eat when it's hungry but do you think he is stressed from having his routine changed?

Why was he kept in a crate for two days?
Also, the above ground pool is a GREAT idea.
Being on the fire department allowed me to borrow one of our big storage tanks that we use on fires. It is about 15' x 15' square and about 3' deep. I put trailer house stairs on the inside and out and now that it is 100 degrees out, I take my dogs in on lead and walk around the outside while they swim.....it is FANTASTIC exercise.
Low impact, cool and the dogs love it.
So I would recommend getting one deep enough so that your boy has to swim in it.
But remember, just as with any exercise and diet program, baby steps is important.
I am sure Connie will come in about diet. My Bloodhound did excellent at losing weight on raw and all of my dogs overall health and attitude improved immensely.
We are here to help you and will do what we can to get your dog on the road to being thin, trim and more energy.

Thank you all for your great advise! It's funny that you mentioned the steps for the dogs because I am trying to find some steps for the dogs to get in and out of the pool.
The pool is large but has a soft ring around it and I need something that won't damage it until my husband can build a deck. I have been looking on the Internet but so far, no luck for soft-rimmed pools.
The reason Koda is being kept in his crate is because I was under the impression by what I read here that he should be kept there to show him that I control every aspect of his life. I take him out for walks and out in my back yard to do his business but he stays in the crate. Did I misunderstand you guys?
Prior to him being in his crate he had free roam of my house. Now I'm confused.
HELP!!

I think Carol may have thought you kept him in the crate for 2 days straight, because you said "he's been in the crate for 2 days...??? Dunno.
Every aspect of his life needs to be controlled by you. Of course, keep it fun for him too (always positive going in the kennel, knuckle bone, etc). He still needs to come out for walks, etc, in fact, I think he can be tethered to you around the house too for added discipline.
Wise words from Cesar: exercise, discipline (obedience stuff) and affection, in that order. It will be challenging, as like you've said, he's had so much free run, but eventually, your discipline will pay off.

You would be correct Michele.....I went and read the other post that Alex posted and I had not seen that one.
You are doing the right thing by crating him....I misunderstood when I read it in this post.....sorry about that.

Whew!!! Thanks you guys! I thought to myself, what ELSE am I doing wrong?????
No, I take Koda for walks and just awhile ago, I let all the dogs in the back yard and gave them each a raw bone with meat on them. I watched the dogs carefully to make sure there weren't any problems.
