I've been feeding raw for the last six weeks and up until last week my 14 month old GSD ate with relish (no, not the hotdog kind). But suddenly he doesn't want to eat the raw. Stopped eating the chicken wings first, now the rest. He will eat it if I hand feed, but that's not good for him or me. He has never been a good eater, but with the raw he was eating great for the first time ever. Got any ideas?
I wouldn't hand feed him, for sure... He won't starve.
Is he acting well in all other ways? Give him a good once over and see if something "isn't right" sometimes that will make them not want to eat. Does he have a favorite food? Try that for a day or so(tuna, burger) whatever. Have his stools been normal?
Playing, poop'n, feeling good, just won't eat. I don't think he understands exactly how much I spend for him for eat like a king. Maybe he saw the food bill and is trying to save me money? he seems be fine. Coat is shiny and heathy. I don't get it.
Kim, could you possibly be over feeding him, and he just isn't hungry? I haven't ran into a wall yet with mine, but I'm really trying to vary the diet. Mine have actually lost a little weight,(I'm still learning to adjust) but their look and attitude is much improved.
My seven month old is down to one feeding a day in the evening and none if training the next morning. I think twice a day on a fourteen month old may be to much. The dog may have slowed down in the growth spirts for a little while. Also, the amount of work the dog is doing could have alot to do with apetite.
As long as there are no health issues, and you should see a vet, then I have a simple rule. You don't want to eat. . .I don't give a crap. I take the food and will offer nothing till the next meal but water. You don't want to eat again? I don't give a crap, I take the food away and don't feed anything else till next meal time.
Eventually the dog eats, never had a dog miss more than one meal. You may be overfeeding, 2 lbs a day seems like a lot. I don't weigh the food I feed, just measure in cups. . .how much food is that? I'm thinking 1lbs of hamburger is a good 2 cups+ right? 14 months and eating 4+ cups a day he better be running his little butt off.
I have found with raw that the dogs really don't need a lot of food to maintain good body weight and health. I have found it easier to keep them slim and fit.
My picky kid (human) was told she had to eat what was offered for dinner or she didn't eat at all.
Caught her sneaking down to the fridge at night eating dinner leftovers.
She was just trying to manipulate me into always making her favorite meals.Maybe this is your problem. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
The dogs eat what they get,(Solid Gold) and the food stays available for about 20 min. Otherwise, better luck next time buster.
Food is always gone in about 10 min if that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Erin
ok ,dog just made a liar out of me. He started eating last night. I did notice that he vomited several times the day before and was going to take him to the Vets today, but now he seems fine. I will keep a close eye on him for the next several days. Thanks for all the help.
