My 4 year old GSD has been showing excessive protectiveness recently and since we are traveling for the summer in Motor Home it is a big problem. He snarled and barked at some people we met on a walk, for no reason, goes ballistic if anyone walks by our campsite. He has no intention of hurting anyone, as as soon as he sees we accept the stranger he turns into a kitten, it seems like an obvious lashing out at what he perceives as a threat to us, but it is way over the top. This weird behavior is not normal for him as this is the 4th summer we have traveled with him and we have not seen this before but there is nothing different about this year from any other. It is almost as though he has turned into a phsycho dog and it is not fun to worry about him scaring the heck out of other campers.
thanks for any help,
Nancy Black
We RV and travel quite a bit with our dogs too. Do you crate him or leave him loose in the RV? We always use crates and limit his view to keep him relaxed. Sometimes I think the change in personality can be from all the different scents and noices and everything else that comes with the new place your at. How's his general obedience? Not letting him look at approaching people on a trail and correcting him long before he goes ballistic so that he never gets a chance to doesnt look as scary to people.

Probably not an issue, but something to think about....could he be sore anywhere at all?
My Dutch was doing that to people and I finally took him to the vet after two days of trying to figure out what the heck was going on and we figured out he had some pain in his neck and right shoulder area.
This dog never barks at people, in fact, people are fun for him as he likes to find new unsuspecting victims to throw his toy......so this behavior was WAY out of character.
We placed him on Duramaxx and rested him for a few days and I also worked on massaging the area and he is fine now.
