Right around the 1st of July, I noticed that Carbon had a small round patch of bare skin, about half an inch directly below his right eye.
It got kind of crusty and the crusty area fell off. Now it's just bare skin, but it's bigger now. Still round, but it just seems like he's losing more fur around it. It's normal skin color, with no sores in it and it's not flakey...he's just bald there. Doesn't bother him to have it touched at all.
I did have a vet look at it around the 3rd of July and he said he figured it was just the spot of an undetected tick bite or something. Now it's about twice the size of a pencil eraser, about double its original size.
Has anyone ever had happen as a result of an tick/insect bite? I'm just trying to figure out if this is normal and I should just wait it out or if it's something I should go back to the vet for.
I would post a pic but my memory card seems to be gone at the moment.
I don't know if this is any help Amber but twice in his life Andy has had Some small spots like that except they were flakey. After all the tests it looks to be a kind of Seborrhea. No mites, nothing fungal. The first time two years ago it went completely away with shampoo and Vitacaps fish oil. I think it came back when I switched supplements.
It was a scraping to check for mites and we looked at him under a black light. About a month ago when I took him in we did all the blood work and checked his thyroid and looked in a stool sample. She described it as a keratinal imbalance in the dog. The first thing I noticed though was dandruff. I didnt notice the spots until he was sleeping on his side under flourescent lights. I guess these types of Seborreha can be triggered like an allergy, she told me that if I researched it not to worry about it being like the severe cases youll read about in some breeds.
Hmmm. Well, I think maybe I'll take him to the vets in a few days to get it checked out if I don't see any improvement. I'm just hesitant because lately it seems like more and more vets are diagnosing through trial and error with medication OR invasive tests. The vet I use is on vacation, so I'm stuck with the other available vets at the clinic, and I'm not too fond of them (for the above reasons). Still, a skin scraping should be fine.
I really did agree with the vet that it was probably some bug bite because of the scabby patch that fell off...but now I think it's weird that he's still losing fur there. I would think by now (11 days later) the fur would be growing back, not disappearing. It's obviously not disturbing him in any way, but it's really noticable on his big black face and it bothers me every time I look at it. I hate these little doggy medical mysteries.
