Our Pup's Nick Name is "MUD BUD" ... and today he was going to come to work with me, but when I went to go get him, he had caked himself in Fresh Mud ... I swear he makes it himself! :-)
So he got to stay home ... in my already dirty kitchen.
I had just cleaned him up last night, and now I will have to do so again tonight! ... but yes you can bathe them thoroughly, even if they might not like it. Sometimes giving them GOOD BOY TREATS will help assist in proper behaviour while bathing.
When you're new to something and worried about screwing everything up, no question seems too obvious.
Edit: Better yet, just take him swimming. I dont' remember the last time I actually soaped up my dog. Rinsing and brushing seem to do it for all but the most rancid things he may have rolled in.
Have some good treats (like sliced ham) for the bathtub if he isn't used to taking a bath. Give him a treat every 30 seconds to keep him focused on the food and not the soap and water. It made Starbuck 1000% easier to deal with.
