First time board member here. Im very happy to find this site. My question relates to the amount of protein in Barf and commercial dog food. I have a 5 month German Shepherd and I started feeding her barf 5 days ago. She loves it, except veggies but Im working on it. I talked me my Vet about it and her only concern was the amount of protein in barf verses commercial dog food. She says everyone is concerned about protein in young dogs so commercial dog food makers started large breed puppy formula to lower the protein but she says barf is rich in protein so she doesnt understand it very much. She gave me a number to call and ask someone else which I did but I just left a message. Does anyone know why barf is better if it has more or the same protein in it than commercial dog food? Thanks for the help!
no anwswer to the protein levels, but I can help with the picky veggie eater, I had the same problem until I switched to baby food, already pureed for me, dogs love. Good luck with other I too I'm interseted in answer
I won't quote protein ratios between processed food and select meats. I can tell you that I am raising a pup on the raw diet and she is very healthy and her growth has been proportionate. No spurts at all.
I mix my pulped veggies w/ground meat, make patties, freeze and add 1/2 a one every other day. The diet can be a balancing act, but once you figure it out, the results are wonderful!
Mark,
It isn't just a protein issue, but the main reason that commercial puppy food had such a high level of protein, and that 'large breed' puppy foods became more popular, is all due to marketing. For years consumers felt that more protein meant a better food - the dog food companies changed formulations to reflect consumer preferences.
For young dog growth concerns, three ratios are important to maintain healthy growth.
1) Calcium to available phosphorus
2) Calcium to energy
3) Protein to energy
