Our pup is generally a quiet dog ... what I find interesting is this ... we'll be out for a walk or a potty break or whatever, and we'll see another animal walk by (cat, dog, skunk, whatever) and we'll just watch it. He's being good ... just sitting there watching it with me. Sometimes (but not Always) after the animal has left the area or we've left the area, then he'll bark.
Last night he was out for his potty break ... and I know I heard something very close by. Could have been rabbits, raccoons, skunks, any of your garden variety in-town forager. He acted oblivious to the noise. As soon as we get inside, then he WOOFS.
Any comments? Just looking for a little bit of dog psyche understanding here.
Another specific, we had a loose dog running towards us. Buddy just sat there while I yelled at the dog to go home. The owner came along, called his dog back. After the dog was "gone", then Buddy barks. I just told him to be QUIET, although I suspect it was another one of his SINGLE "WOOFS".
Hm. I could be wrong here but what im thinking is this....
Your dog is very submissive so after the other animal is gone your dog barks because he feels safe and that the threat is gone your dog decides to bark and claim his territory only once he knows no one is challenging him.
My pup is definately NOT Dog Aggressive. He is Dog Friendly, People Friendly, et cetera. We're working on being ALOOF! he he he... pretty tough for a Golden, but he's doing well ...
Your reasoning sounds reasonable. I'll give you high marks...
My thoughts were, he's doing good with the aloof thing. Still attentive, but keeping his peace. When the situation has passed, his WOOF is much the same as "Gosh, that was fun. Did I do good, Mom? How's about a treat for the good boy?"
