I finally made the decision to go 100% RAW ! I saw my dog's built and appetite were going nowhere with my "super premium" kibble: he actually runs away when I call him to eat! Though there have been markedly good improvements since he has been eating half kibble half raw for a week now and boy I just can't wait to see how much more beautiful he will be in another week's time when he's on a full raw diet. The 50-50 approach this past week, I think, is the major factor on why my 7-month old pup decided to drop the kibble all together.
I started today with chicken necks and with the two 500g feedings I gave him, he was sniffing all over the house looking and asking for more!
Is it normal for his bowel movement to slow down? I noticed that he skipped his potty schedule tonight and I figured his digestive tract is adjusting to the longer time it would take to digest fresh raw meat compared to kibble. Is this ok and expected?

His digestive system is simply relishing the genuine food. It doesn't want to part with it.
Seriously though, don't worry about it. He won't explode. Chicken necks are pretty bony though, so there'll be some pretty dense crap once it does come.
If you aren't doing so already, get him on daily salmon oil (in combo with vitamin C and E). That's the one supplement where, even on top of raw feeding, I saw an unmistakable improvement in the gloss of his coat.

John, it's normal for the bowl movements to skip and then come in small dose and look like rocks...don't worry it will all come together. My dogs LOVE chicken and turkey necks, they are like cheetos to them!
Dogs will go through a period of a bit of constipation to a week of the runs and then back to normal for good, at least for most.Let your dogs body adapt to the changes and remember that too , the water content he used to drink changes and so therefore it may constipate at first..normal to see.Variety is the key, I know you just made the transition but if you can get chicken backs that is a great part of the chicken that makes it balanced, as far as bone and meat ratio.Don't forget to add some gizzards, heart, liver to your meals.I don't add it all the time but at least 4 times a week or more.Sometimes less.As long as I don't forget to add it....
Your dog looks nice, raw will make a difference in his health for sure. Good luck!

I just recently started hearing about raw feeding, and am not sure I am up to it. Would it be OK to feed Kibble and some raw meat each day without going "whole hog" so to speak?

IMHO, I would go whole hog or put your dog on an all-natural kibble if you do not feel up to going raw.....

This is a great list of kibble. Raw is always better though......

Just looked at the link, and thank goodness I am feeding Canidae, and it's on there! So I shouldn't give any raw with it, or would an occasional chicken neck, back, raw egg, ect. be OK? I would like to see him eat some, maybe eventually switch him over. What do you think?

As long as you don't feed it mixed together or even close together. As a treat is okay....putting eggs, plain yogurt, fish oil with kibble is okay, but putting meat, veggies and that kind of stuff, I would not recommend.
Connie is really good at this stuff, so I am sure when she sees this post she will respond.
There has been a lot of threads on this subject and the article that Cindy Easton Rhodes wrote is great.
If you do a search of this site, you will come up with GREAT stuff.

I'm with Carol here. I know that many many dogs do just fine with raw meat mixed with kibble, but so far I have not been convinced that the kibble (which takes about 3 times as long for the dog to digest as raw meat) doesn't slow down the raw meat and force it into unnaturally long contact with the dog's system. Much of the dog's imperviousness to food pathogens that would fell a human is that short travel time from one end to the other, limiting the opportunity for pathogens to colonize.
A lot of other web sites have stopped recommending that kibble and raw meat be separated, but I haven't seen any convincing arguments.

Good job, switching to fresh food!
I'd probably suspect that I was going a little heavy on the bone, and maybe "up" the muscle meat a little.
P.S. Raw meat is digested *much* faster than kibble.

Ey folks! Guess I worried too soon. He did return to his normal bowel routine. And wow! You are right: they do look like small li'l, dry, white rocks hehehe. It's way far from his poop quality when he was on kibble: they were big, moist and smelly. I'm so glad I made the shift! The only "drawback" is that he seems to be more hyperactive: have to get up more early to give him a good walk and some training!
