I posted a topic on the discussion board at the Norwegian American Bulldog club's website where I complained about the lack of focus on the breed's working ability. The AB is a new breed in Norway, and I therefore feel that it is important to establish a good foundation so that the breed doesn't turn into a showbreed. I like the AB, but because of the lack of interest in using the breed in IPO/Schutz, I feel that I am better off with the dogs I keep now, boxers. The answers I got pretty much avoided my opinions about the AB, instead they started to claim that the AB has a lot more drive and working ability than workingline boxers. Some Swedish persons also claimed this, and knowing that Sweden is a better country when in comes to working dogs, I started to wonder...
What are your opinions in this? Which breed has the greatest chance to succeed in Schutzhund?
If you ask me, I'd still say the Boxer. True, the breed has gone downhill as far as being a reliable working dog, but it's sheer physical charteristics still make it a better dog for SchH, IPO, Ring. The AB is too big and bulky of a dog. Plus I really don't think there are better working AB's than Boxers. If anything there are the same, or less. Some decent working Boxers are now starting to become available in the States.
