We recently started feeding our dogs the raw diet. The dogs enjoy the change and eat the food with no problem except the chicken backs. Most of my dogs are past 10 years old and do not have the best teeth. I have considered grinding the bones. I tried the butcher but he said grinding bones would do damage to his grinder. Would I have have the same problem at home?
A kitchen cleaver is your friend! I can take a whole chicken and quarter in in about 20 seconds with a good cleaver. Try one, just have a good cutting board for it also.
I give leg quarters whole to my 13-17 lb terriers. I used to chop them up for the 11yr old Border, but he learned even with all his broken/missing teeth. They enjoy the chewing.
I was feeding my dog the raw diet but then she had intestinal surgery (once before going on raw diet, twice afterwards) so we decided to grind the bones because of potential scarring in her intestine. The grinder we used can be found at Northern Tool. You can see the model here : http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/s...tegoryId=763441
It ground the bones (Chicken bones and turkey necks) easily with no damage to the grinder. The only problem is the clean up. It became a real pain in the butt to be grinding bones all the time and we eventually gave up and went back to kibble with much chagrin. If your dog is small then grinding wouldn't be so bad, but grinding for a big dog, that takes a lot of dedication...
