Hi –I have been confronted with a question that I cannot answer -how does one or does any body know a method that one can be used to rate commercial dog food with -from good to bad?
Part two- which commercial dog food would you feed a working dog that has the best nutrition value? And why? -
Chad is, as far as I know, the most qualified to answer the truth about the nutrition requirements in dogs on this board. Dr. Stahl's area of research is recombinant protein expression, mineral bioavailability, and nutritional biochemistry at Iowa State University. He is an excellent and experienced dog decoy/helper and is fully aware of a working dog’s nutritional needs.
Since, I don't see you and your mixing up a BARF diet every day as some might post that you do. His advice will fit your bill about dog nutrition.
A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down. - Robert Benchley
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. - Edward Hoagland
Reiner,
your PM is full. I'm not familiar with the labelling laws for animal feed in your country, so this advice for comparison of food by the label may not be applicable.
For performance animals we typically look at protein quality, protein:energy balance, and lipid profile. Since companies will not disclose the data needed to determine these factors consumers are stuck reading ingredient labels. If you send me the label of the new food you are considering, I will compare it to your current food for you.
