Ordered the quick release prong collar from Leerburg. It arrived today (just happens to be on Lucy's 11 mth B-Day).
Took her for her first walk with it during lunch and it was like a different dog.
I thought she was a pretty hard dog, she could take what I thought was a very hard correction with a flat collar and it wouldn't slow her down. But with the prong she tried to chase something twice. I didn't have to correct, she corrected herself and let out a pretty hefty yelp both times. When right back to walking calmly immediately. Guess she isn't as hard as I first though.
I think at the most I would need a flick of the wrist correction to really get her attention.
I plan on using it for walks mainly. We are also dog-sitting my MIL's dog and she is constantly harrasing her and ignores corrections on the flat collar. I will probably try it out for that too.
I tried to find good info on when to wear it, take it off, etc but couldn't find too much.
What's the best way to condition so that she begins to behave whether or not the prong is on?
Can't remember if the answer to your question is in here, but if you haven't read it, take a look. http://www.leerburg.com/pdf/fitprong.pdf What I did was put the prong on my dog and give her a treat everytime I put it on and she was calm. I'd put it on her 1/2 hr before I'd use it, and 1/2 after after. Now she minds with it on or off and she's not afraid of it. Sometimes I make her wear it just to wear it and take it off an hour later.
Just read that this morning as a review before putting it on. Good info about fitting, wear to place it, placing the ring, attaching a backup collar, etc, but not on the actual use of the collar in training.
She had no problem at all with the collar going on, more looking for feedback on how long most people leave it on and when.
Good idea just putting it on for an hour or so then taking it off.
We used to leave the prong and a drag line on our dog whenever he was out of the crate, between about 4 months and whenever it was he started acting civilized in the house. Now we only put it on for walks.
