I would NOT recommend them for an adult dog. They're fine for puppies though; puppies lose their teeth anyway so you don't care whether they damage and break them

I'm bumping this because I've read in several places about "parasites" (no details) that wild squirrel, rabbit, bear, and deer have, some "at certain times of the year." I don't have access to game, so I've never read up. Anyone else? (I do understand about wild rabbit meat and the tapeworm they can infect the dog with. But is there more?) What is the parasite (or parasites, plural) that I've read about? Trichina spiralis, maybe?

Try searching on "Feeding Wild Game" and/or "Venison". The threads also address the best ways to preserve the game and kill any possible parasites in the meat. After much research, my personal preference is to cook wild game before feeding (I do not give cooked bones) and save the raw and bones for store-bought meat. But that's just me. Janice Jarman

Some dogs will gnaw the meat on a leg and others want to try to eat the whole thing. I haven't had any problems with parasites or worms. But thats me. The rule of thumb that I've always heard, and used, was to not take rabbits or squirrels until the 1st (maybe 2nd) frost of winter. Not sure what parasite or problem you're avoiding by following that, though.

And that's mostly for human consumption because they make the meat unsightly and germy. There's some sort of infection they can carry in the hot weather, too, but doggoned if I can remember what it is. You don't want to get the blood on you, I've been told that. Is it myxomytosis (sp??)? I really doubt if wild predators wait until first frost to begin eating squirrels and rabbits... That said, I freeze and cook wild game (whether I'm going to eat it, or feed it to the dogs) due to an entirely personal preference. Lots of people on this board feed raw wild game to their dogs with no problems at all. Janice Jarman
