My 7.5 month old GSD loves to play Chuck It. I'm tossing the ball a good way out and she runs hard and fast to go get it and bring it back. We do this between 5-10 minutes, until it looks like she's had enough. She enjoys the heck out of it, and would go longer if I let her.
At this age, is it Ok to let her play so hard? She needs the exercise; and she needs to expend energy, but I worry about her joints. We also have our 20-30 minute walk most mornings and evenings.
This evening, on slippery grass, she took a slide and tumble and came back limping a bit. We went straight to the kennel and I palpated the leg with no reaction of pain. I'm sure she has just pulled a muscle and we'll take it easy tomorrow; but it made me start thinking that she might be too young to play so hard.
I've posted about this product before and it might be of interest to some - Recovery SA. It's not just for healing, it acts as a preventative as well. You can read about it on http://www.recoverysa.com/
I've given this to Lear since he was a puppy, over a year now. He has slipped on mud when chasing toys, slipped on the kitchen floor, and sometimes I've winced at some of the slips and there have been many. None of these incidents has ever affected him. No limping, no lameness.
It's also for horses. Just went to the site and see they now have it for humans. Think I'll get some for me
Thank you both for your responses...I appreciate your feedback. Heidi is doing much better today...but she had a quiet day (watch out for her tomorrow, she'll be wound up :crazy
That product RecoverSA sounds interesting and I'll look into it further. My dogs currently get a liquid glucosomine supplement. I wonder if these could complement each other or if it should be one or the other.
Barbara, Recovery SA has glucosamine in it, as well as MSM. I wouldn't give both your product and Recovery together simply because that would be double glucosamine, don't know if that amount would be considered an overdose nor what implications an overdose would have (if there is such a thing).
If you feel like switching at some time, I would just give the Recovery SA alone.
Here's the ingredients from the site http://recoverysa.com/recovery_sa.htm
"Each 1/2 teaspoon (2 grams) contains: 75 mg Nutricol®, 500 mg glucosamine, 500 mg MSM, 250 mg l-lysine, 100 mg TMG, 135 mg vitamin C, 50 iu water-dispersible natural vitamin E, and 50 mg elemental magnesium.
Suggested use: 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon per 20 pounds bodyweight or as directed by your veterinarian."
It's in powder form.
As the bottle states you have to work into it slowly, building up to the required dose over a period of 2 weeks. Feeding the suggested dose for about 2 months, then you can cut back to half the dose after that.
