I am still interested in how people learn about all this other than by hands on experience and learning by reading here on the forum. It's interesting and frightening at the same time.
I subscribe to several vet med newsletters as well as buying every new book (well, many) that comes out, and taking canine nutrition classes.
However, you can learn a TON by sitting down and reading the vet med web sites and Home Vet, Shirley's Wellness, and on and on. I keep computer files with what seems to me to be the best and most recent info on each subject (dog nutrition, joints, digestion, and so on) and spend some time keeping those files weeded out and current.
You can also learn a TON by subscribing to Whole Dog Journal and getting some of the books they recommend in each issue.
Also, I now have most of the books Leerburg sells.
You will see it even has a web page for books Ed Frawley does NOT recommend.
For a very good start, I would go here: http://www.leerburg.com/feedingdogs.htm
and read the articles listed and buy ANY of those books. I have every book on that page, and recommend each one.
Good for you for wanting to do some research. You'll be glad you did.

Connie: You constantly amaze me with how many different links you can toss out on nearly every subject imaginable. I've often wondered and can only imagine how big your filing system is.
Denise: Connie sold me on The Whole Dog Journal. It is a steal for all the good information you get out of it. I look forward to it every month.

The "secret," if there is a secret, is maintenance. Every two or three months I make myself sit down and review it, and Google for more recent info from the authoritative sources I've learned to trust.
That part is a litle tedious. But the actual reading of the new info is not..... and every good site or book always gives you more sources!
