What can i say i have that effect... first time for a grown man but oh well :-D Anyhow i would greatful for that. I am deffently looking to network and of course learn more about training. I don't mind the 3 hour drive if it sets me up latter on down the road. I would like to enter the K9 world (and make a living from it) with out going the LEO rout (not that its a bad thing :-D) when i get out of the military.
Mike, one thing to think about - to make a decent living training dogs means finding a niche and excelling in it - and to do this, you need *experience*.
I had a good reputation and made *really* good money providing serious PPD's in the U.S. and Central and South America ( there are several forum members that have gotten dogs from me ) but I had a 30 plus year background in training serious dogs, which no amount of quickie schooling could ever substitute for. It was hard work and I got injured frequently but it was very satisfying.
If you want to train the type of dogs that are worth training, you just have to put in the time learning the in's and out's of serious training - only experience will teach you to really be able to read a dog, you can't learn that in a book.
I'd recommend attending as many high level seminars as you can from different top trainers to learn the different styles and techniques of those trainers and adopt the style that most suits you - that will be more valuable that you can imagine!
Please, don't take what i said the wrong way. Deffently not looking for a "get rich quick" kind of deal. I would just like to start out where i don't need a part time job along with working with dogs.
I know experience is key. I feel like i have a strong starting knowledge of how to train a working dog, but thats about it. I have no idea how to fix the smaller problems that don't have anything to do with detection or patrol work.
I am planning on going to as many seminars as i can. If time and money permits it also would like to go to Triple Crown. Some one already recommended a kennel for me to get a apprenticeship at near Bragg when i get there (hell my memory is so bad you might have been the one who told me about it)
hell, do you have any job openings in about 3 years? ;-D

I actually worked for a German lady several years ago who was into Schutzhund big time. However, I did not leave there on good terms, so i doubt I would be welcome at her club.(Personality & professional conflicts re: grooming...not training) She is the only one I know of in my area. She is an excellent trainer. I do have some contacts in the Dog world nearby, I will contact them to see if they can help me find a club. I agree it would be good for networking and to train with others. I like Mike's idea of forming my own club. Equipment I imagine would be costly...and I wouldn't even know where to start!
Equipment will be the easy part, the hard part will be finding a good decoy.................

How do you find out what line a particular dog has? I am interested in finding a dog with a specific line. .... There is a black & silver GSD named "Sick Nick" who worked on the streets of South Florida with a K9 Officer named Mike Harlow.
I own this book and pulled it off the shelf. No mention of the pedigree but as mentioned above, the author owned him. Perhaps contact him? It mentions that the dog's initial training before he got him was the Lee County's Sheriff's Office.
Must admit that I have not read the book but it appears that the author is involved with bull breeds so you might check out those areas.
