Hi! First, I am sorry if this is the wrong forum to put this in....but, I wasn't really sure where to put it. I was hoping people could give me some examples of high scoring schutzhund dogs (competition level - GSDs) that are also house dogs, not kennel dogs. I am just kind of looking for proof that there are dogs out there that you can raise in the house as your companion and still compete with at a high level in schutzhund. Thanks!
I don't know about Schutzhund, but several of the very good competitors in NAPD keep their dogs as house pets. The trial is much different with less repetition of scenarios.

Hi Richard,
While I enjoy working my dogs in schutzhund, I am starting to think that from what I have heard about NAPD, I might enjoy that more. I like the idea of the unknown scenarios. It seems like you would have to have a lot more control of your dog - not that my training skills are probably up to par for this! I could be wrong, but it also seems that dogs that compete in NAPD are more apt to protect you in real life. But I guess that is what I was wondering....I know there has to be some high level schutzhund dogs out there that are house dogs and will protect for real. I'm not looking to compete nationally (not that it wouldn't be nice!)but I know people who'd like to and don't feel they can with a house dog. I'm just hoping to find the names of some dogs that will prove them wrong.
I do not think the answer you seek will prove anything. It is not whether a dog lives in a house or not. It has to do with a dog being subject to the pressures of adhering to house rules. If you can somehow let your puppy or dog run free without correcting him and do not play with him inside so to save fun time for the field. Then the answer is yes. But that is a very hard task to accomplish. Another point. Just because a dog received a 298 in a national trail doesn’t mean that he would not have been even better if he were kenneled.
I understand what you are saying. I know the reasons why a lot of people kennel their dogs and I am not trying to say that it's bad. Basically, temperaments, personality, training ability aside; I was just looking for some names of dogs that had been successful in schutzhund and were also house dogs. I was just trying to find out for a friend who has had a very tough time and is very torn right now on what to do. I just wanted to be able to tell her 'see, with the right dog, it can be done'.
