Well it could have been predicted. Why is it that so many owners that profess to know dogs don't apply what they've supposedly learned? Add to that they seemingly are blind to what the dog is going through and what the animal is capable of doing.
For the last week or so, because of either foolishness or stupidity I agreed to try and help with an agressive GSD. Even though I am certainly NOT a professional trainer of any sort. Never mind the original post on this matter, this dog has no passive side. In fact I dare anyone to approach this dog without a bite suit!
Okay, okay I'll try to calm down. This story though, just gets worse and worse. Over the last week I've watched this dog and handler/trainer, noted very basic and fundamental mistakes. Simple things like corrections before commands, no praise for work well done, you know really basic stuff. I mention this and I'm informed the dog knows what she has to do. But I got to say this dog is always on edge. If this is the way the animal has learned, it's no wonder she is what she is. Oh and the best part, she's intact. Thats right; the owner wants to breed her!
Its times like this I think the best thing I can do for dog, the owner, and humanity is just shoot the poor animal and put her out of her misery.
The more people I meet, the better I like dogs.
Randy
As an edit:
This is the second dog his has had that turned out badly!
Jeez you'd think maybe it would dawn on him something ain't right. Or is it just me?
Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh,
Randy
Okay fellow online members, I admit to being close to unintelligible in last nights post. Apoplectic, comes to mind. Is this what professional trainers go through? Be told one thing, only to find out something completely different? Or to be lied to by omission of intent or facts? No wonder theres so few good trainers around. Talk about flustered endeavors. To watch all your good work walk away into the sunset, knowing the bad stuff is going to be carried on.
The dog I think I can do something with ( I won't go into details, but honest she has promise), the owner however, well hell I can't treat him like a dog. I'd gladly turn him on to Ed Frawley's books and cds on agression and dominating dogs, if the owner didn't already know so much (you catch my drift?). Any ideas on how I can get it through to this guy? Does Ed have a book or DVD about NOT breeding?
I'm also not sure he (the owner) has completely accepted the fact that his dog is ever going to be the nice, calm, trustworthy, alert dog mine is (not to brag!).
So what do you all think? Cut my loses. Or keep trying to reach the both of them? (she is a magnificat animal)
Do no harm,
Randy
I would keep trying, maybe you could just let him know of Ed's site and info on dog training, without telling him how much help he needs, and maybe even get him a video of dog training.
I think the dog is worth the effort. And all of us have been ignorant one time or another, so give it a try.
From the agressive tendencies you have told us about, I don't know if I would take the dog yourself though.

May God bless you
