There's a long and interesting article on WorkingDogs.com. It's full of information, but it claims that BARF stands for "bones and raw food," and the actual acronym (I believe) is "biologically appropriate raw food."
My own vet is of the opinion that e.coli doesn't affect dogs in the same potentially disastrous way that it does humans, and that healthy dogs shed it into the stool.

Both acronyms are correct.
THe Bones and raw food acronym was coined by Billinghurst who is probably most responsible for getting the ball rolling after pet food became ubiquitous and, I believe, predates the "Biologically Appropriate" acronym
The only reason I replied to the statement was that you seemed to use the distinciton to devalue the quality of the information from the referenced site..........that is all.
And yes reading researching talking with people and making an informed decision is what is important.

This has been touched on in this thread, but I want to add that recreational bones are no longer part of my own BARF feeding, since seeing two expensive crowns done over the years. Maybe you have crowns yourself, but when it's your dog you're adding anesthesia (the expense and the risks). One was a terrier and one a GS mix, and both were VERY EXPENSIVE and necessitated SEVERAL LONG-DISTANCE TRIPS. Both were the result of recreational bones; one was raw. Anecdotal experience colors everyone's point of view...........

Nancy,
You're right; I did sound like that. Didn't mean to; meant to read all there is to read.
